Auburn and Alabama will square off this Saturday for another chapter of the historic Iron Bowl rivalry. For the third year in a row, a National Championship Game birth may be on the line in possibly the most heated rivalry in all of sports. Two years ago, a struggling Auburn team came minutes away from knocking off an undefeated Alabama Crimson Tide team, who pulled it off in the end with a game winning touchdown drive. Last year, with the script flipped, the undefeated Auburn Tigers overcame a 24 to nothing deficit en route to their own national championship.
This year’s Iron Bowl will be the 76th time the two rivals meet. Alabama has won 40 of those meetings, while Auburn has won 34, with one tie. However, since the year 2000, Auburn leads the series 8 to 3. Prior to 1989, every Iron Bowl game was played at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, where the Crimson Tide won 32 of 47 meetings. In 1989, the game was played at Auburn’s home field, Jordan Hare Stadium, for the first time. Auburn holds at 7 and 3 Iron Bowl record at Jordan Hare Stadium, where this year’s game will be held.
In what has become commonplace in the Auburn and Alabama rivalry, both a possible National Championship birth and the Heisman Trophy are on the line. in 2009, Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram and the future champion Crimson Tide defeated Auburn 26 to 21. Last year’s game featured the national champion Tigers and the Heisman Trophy winning Cam Newton. This year, the #2 ranked Crimson Tide are set to earn a BCS Title game birth with a win after losses by Oklahoma State, Oregon, and Oklahoma last week. Alabama running back Trent Richardson is a leading candidate for this year’s Heisman Trophy, and is looking to make a statement with a big game against his arch rival.
The circumstances under which the two teams meet this week are very different than they were a year ago. Auburn, who lost star players Cam Newton and Nick Fairley to the NFL draft as well as almost all of their other starters to graduation, is looking for a positive end to a rough roller coaster season. For a young team relying so heavily on underclassman, a win knocking the Crimson Tide out of the championship game would make the season a success. Alabama, on the other hand, has dominated their competition this year, with its lone loss coming in a hard fought battle against top ranked LSU. They would certainly want no more than to walk into Auburn’s home to take away a win that will offer them a rematch with LSU and a shot at revenge.
As has often been the case throughout the history of this rivalry, much in on the line in this week’s game between the Auburn Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide. The only thing that is certain is a hard fought battle with a lot of hurt feelings.
